Siquijor. I grew up fearing this place for its reputation of housing some of the Philippines’ most feared “mythical creatures.” Legend also has it that the place is known for black magic.
It was in 2014 when I finally had a different view of this place. All it took was a one-time search on Google. Try it for yourself. Type “Siquijor”, click Search, and choose the images tab. What you’ll see pretty much convinced me to go there myself.
So contrary to the hearsay, I made my way to the island of Siquijor after exploring the city of Dumaguete (Blog post about it here: https://samarellano.com/2017/05/20/dumaguete-philippines/ ).
It was roughly a 1-hour boat ride from the Dumaguete port.
The sun was out that day. No rain, no strong winds. The journey was rather smooth and comfortable.
As we neared the island, this was what greeted us.
Pristine clear waters. WOW.
I was too excited to see more of the island’s beauty!
I only had 2 days and 1 night to see all of it.
So I dropped my stuff at the beachfront resort I was staying at and rushed to the beach to catch the sunset.
Imagine my reaction when I saw this.
What happened to the white sand beach? The pristine clear waters? This was NOT what I saw on Google.
Omg.
I went around and asked the locals. Apparently, it was Amihan (cool northeast wind) that time. That’s why there were a lot of the coconut husks and dried sea plants.
Lesson learned. Do prior research before planning a trip. Haha.
Nonetheless, I was determined to still make the most out of the trip.
So the next day, I hired a local to take me around the island.
He asked me what I wanted to see and what I wanted to do.
I told him to show me what’s beautiful about Siquijor.
He laughed and took up the challenge.
I got on the tricycle
and was excited about what I was about to see and experience.

For a Php600 (12 USD) tour and roughly just another Php200 (4 USD) for the environmental fees, I was able to see and do all those in a day.

I went back to the resort
to end my magical Siquijor experience by doing what I love the most.
